THE BUCKLE

Drawing inspiration from W.E.B. Du Bois’ Data Portraits, I aimed to visually represent over 180 churches within a six-mile radius of my home in Chattanooga, known as the 'Buckle of the Bible Belt.' Growing up surrounded by this abundance of churches felt normal, yet my research revealed how deeply embedded Christianity was in my childhood experience.

This decorative frame features the phrase 'slack jawed me,’ inspired by a song by Sylvan Esso. It encapsulates themes of reflection, surprise, and gratitude, emphasizing the importance of cherishing life's fleeting moments.
