How Could This
Go Wrong?
Growing up, my father was the embodiment of relentless curiosity and mischief, often left to explore the world with little adult supervision. Together with his brother, they embarked on countless adventures, getting into all sorts of trouble around Denver. Over the years, these escapades transformed him into a captivating storyteller. My family affectionately dubbed them the "How Could This Go Wrong?" stories.
What began as a 60-second hand-drawn charcoal animation inspired by one of my dad's stories eventually evolved into a full zine series. After conducting an in-depth interview for a project during my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to delve deeper into his childhood adventures. I asked him for more details and vivid descriptions about his escapades, which yielded rich new insights. This collaboration culminated in the zine series, which features six new "How Could This Go Wrong?" stories, spanning his life from age two to fourteen, and brings his wild adventures to life in an engaging format.
Following a car accident in October 2024, I was left with chronic nerve pain that intensified with fine motor movements, particularly in activities like drawing and painting. In response to these challenges, I turned back to creating zines. This shift allowed me to experiment with cutting out shapes and playing with color, exploring how different elements interacted on each page. It became a therapeutic outlet, enabling me to express my creativity in a new way while adapting to my physical limitations.
FUNKY ZINES
As time went on, I noticed significant improvements and began to experiment more with sewing. I also found that I could draw for short periods, gradually regaining my creative expression.
